The German painter Arnold Balwé was best known for his powerfully painted, brightly colored landscapes, flowers and still lifes. He was born in Dresden and spent his childhood in Durban, South Africa, as the son of the Dutch consul. Internationally oriented as he was, he attended the Academy in Antwerp in 1920 and then the Academy in Munich (1922-1927). During this study period he also made study trips, including to the Netherlands. Balwé then lived and worked in Germany, where he was better known than in our country.
