August Allebé made his name first and foremost as a professor and director of Amsterdam's Rijksacademie. From 1880 onwards, a new generation of painters, which included the impressionists G.H. Breitner, I.L. Israels and G. Rueter, developed under his inspiring leadership. Allebé himself was skilled at drawing and painting anecdotal genre pieces, portraits, floral still lifes and animal studies in the Artis zoo. From Amsterdam he took several study trips, mostly in summer, to cities including Andernach and Brussels.
