Painter belonging to the Larense School. At the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam he specialized in portrait and figure drawing under August Allebé. This skill came in handy when he started painting peasant interiors in Laren in 1898. His figures are usually engrossed in daily activities such as peeling potatoes, sewing, cutting or spinning. He was also a popular still life painter in his time.
