The oeuvre of sculptor Bert Kiewit shows admiration for the great figurative sculptors of the 19th century, such as Rodin, Maillol and Marini. People were his main source of inspiration, and they served as models for both his monumental sculptures and small sculptures. Kiewit was self-taught and did not become an artist until the age of 40. After his retirement he moved to Drenthe, where most of the monumental statues of him can now be found. They often depict the customs and everyday life in Drenthe. With his small sculptures he was more personal in the choice of his subjects.
