The oeuvre of the Scottish painter Charles James McCall mainly comprises London cityscapes and moody scenes of - mostly - women in an interior. Over the years, the artist pays more and more attention to atmosphere and light, until in the 1950s he arrives at sunlit interiors with sharp light-dark contrasts. Titles such as 'The sunlit room' and 'Morning' are in line with this. In those years, he also painted a number of interiors on the French Côte d'Azur, in which color and light capture the mood of a languid, southern summer day.
