Relatively little is known about the life and education of the 17th-century German artist Christoph Ludwig Agricola. We know that he mainly worked in Augsburg and traveled in England, Holland, France and Italy. He mainly painted landscapes, often influenced by the work of the French artists Claude Lorraine and Nicolas Poussin. His preference for special light effects such as night views and scenes with setting sun is striking. Agricola must also have made a name for himself as a painter of refined bird studies on parchment. As a result of a long stay in Italy, much of his work can be seen in museums in Florence, Naples and Bologna
