Constantin Meunier was a Belgian painter of genre scenes, landscapes and figures. He started out as a sculptor, but from 1860 he devoted himself entirely to painting. At first he painted religious and historical scenes, then mainly workers and miners in the Borinage were his subject. The style of his often impressive performances betrays the influence of François Miller. Constantin Meunier's work was in high demand in Belgium and France.
