The self-made artist Daan van Golden painted large abstract expressionist gouaches in the early 1960s. That changed during a stay in Japan in 1962-1964. There he 'discovered' the decorative patterns of wrapping paper and textiles and henceforth took these as the starting point for his work. It became characteristic of his oeuvre: the use of found images and patterns and the repetition of that motif in different forms.
