Dirk Kruizinga became as famous for his drawings and watercolours as he was for his paintings. He made watercolours while traveling in France and Italy, especially landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes. They differ from his oil paintings, which are sometimes markedly anecdotal and have a style related to old Flemish painting, such as that of Pieter Breughel and his surroundings. Kruizinga did not copy reality, but composed it with his own fantasy, combining realistic and invented details. His palette is restrained, sober. In his hometown of Amsterdam, he was one of the founders of De Brug, which united realistic painters.
