Belgian artist Edouard Claes had a penchant for landscapes painted in the Impressionist style. But other themes also appear in his oeuvre, such as depictions of nightlife. Claes studied art at the academy in Brussels. He also lived and worked in this city for a long time. In 1904 he took part in the Prix de Rome, in 1910 he took part in the preparatory competition for this prestigious prize.
