Eduard Houbolt, born in 1885, was a student at the Hague Drawing Academy from 1905 to 1908. At an early age he showed a great interest in drawing and painting city and village views. In addition, he develops into a smooth impressionist, who shows great artistic talent, especially in his portraits and figures. From 1924 Houbolt lived in Paris for several years. During these years he wrote contributions for Elsevier's Illustrated Monthly Journal entitled 'Walks through Montmartre with a painting box and drawing book'. This shows that he also had writing talent. After Paris, the painter lived in Belgium for thirteen years before returning permanently to The Hague in 1939. He was a member of the Hague Sketch Club and the Dutch Art Circle
