Egbert Schaap was a man of weight in the art world of his time. He was one of the founders of Sint Lucas in Amsterdam, an artists' association in which young impressionists gathered, and in 1913 he became chairman. After his studies at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie and his marriage to the painter Hendrika van der Pek, he settled in 1896 on the outside of Villa Nova near Kortenhoef. From that time his landscapes, often drenched in sunlight and painted with a brisk brush, were often created in the vicinity of 's Graveland, Kortenhoef, Nigtevecht and Ankeveen.
