Sculptor Ferdinand Lepcke became known for his graceful female nudes, which were considered the ideal plastic creation of 'beauty in the form of the unveiled female body.' Initially, he created these works in the neo-Baroque style of the Berlin School, and from the 1890s onward, in the Art Nouveau style. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and at the age of 27 received a scholarship from the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts to study in Rome. Even during his time at the academy, Lepcke began making 'salon bronzes' for sale on the art market. For this, he used plaster models and casts in various sizes and materials. Portrait busts and monumental sculptures were also part of his regular repertoire. Among his most acclaimed salon sculptures are the kissing and embracing couples, a series of which won awards at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.
