Though he completed his artistic training at the academy in The Hague, Ferry Slebe regarded himself as self-taught. Abandoning all he had learned, he evolved a lyrical figural style in still lifes and gay, carefree canvases. In the 1950s he was a member of Verve, a group of experimental painters in The Hague. In this painting we see an exhibition about Vincent van Gogh. In the room, which is filled with works by this painter, we see Van Gogh himself as a visitor to his own exhibition.
