Firmin Baes

A woman knitting in the garden
pastel on paper 45.0 x 49.8 cm, signed l.r. and dated 19 April 1914

This work on paper was previously for sale.

Belgian painter, pupil of the symbolist Léon Frédéric. After 1908 he applied himself to the use of pastel chalk, which he modeled as a powder color with his thumb and in which he achieved great virtuosity. After 1915, this earned him many portrait commissions for the Belgian aristocracy. Characteristic for his work is the strong composition, contrast between light and shadow and the rich colors.
