The German impressionist Franz Hienl-Merre was born in Mainz in 1869 but lived most of his life in Munich, southern Germany. From there he painted German alpine landscapes, the Tegernsee and forest views, but also the city with its nightlife, fair and variety and beach life in an impressionistic way. The painter was also particularly adept at painting horses in motion, such as those engaged in horse racing, polo, and the trot.
