Born in The Hague in 1839, Kaemmerer, a pupil of S.L. Verveer, spent the greater part of his life living and working in Paris. He specialized in painting landscapes, later turning to genre paintings in an 18th century French setting. He achieved particular success with his depictions of elegant ladies. His contemporaries idealized the 18th century as a period of luxury, refinement and courteous behaviour.
