Gerarda, or 'Meik', Rueter was born in 1904 as the second daughter of the painter Georg Rueter and Gerarda Lang. After her final exams she followed a course at the Kunstambachtsschool for girls in Amsterdam (1921-1924) and then attended the Rijksacademie (1924-1930) for a sculpture training. There she was taught by the well-known sculptor Jan Bronner - teacher of Mari Andriessen and Wessel Couzijn, among others - whose influence would determine her further artistic development. The artist's work is characterized by simplicity and a monumental style, which became more naturalistic over the years. She made animal sculptures, figures or portraits, mostly of children, in stone, wood, bronze and terracotta. Her small work is poetic and refined in expression. The most famous monumental sculpture by the artist is the Flood Monument in Stellendam (1956).
