As is often the case with artists of the time, little is known about the life of George Hyde-Pownall. It is known that he painted small, attractive cityscapes of London from 1900 onwards, usually at night. With the combination of loose brushwork and attention to detail he used, the painter placed himself in the tradition of James Whistler. Hyde-Pownall also lived and worked in Australia for some time.
