Germ de Jong belongs to the group of Dutch painters who worked for short or longer periods in Paris in the 1920s. Initially he mainly painted landscapes in a dark palette. In Paris his work becomes robust, striking and above all colourful. He prefers to paint cityscapes, which in their preference for straight housing blocks, fences and blank walls betray the pursuit of a certain abstract order. Returning to the Netherlands (1933), De Jong settled in Schoorl near Bergen, where from that time on he mainly occupied himself with what can be called his specialty: the flower still life. They are mostly colourful bouquets set up in a spontaneous brushstroke in full, blooming colours. They earned him recognition, publicity and in 1956 a retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Germ de Jong traveled extensively, including to Germany, Italy, Spain and North Africa.
