The German painter German Grobe attended the Akademie in Düsseldorf, where his instructors included the sea painter E.G. Ducker. He went on to become a part of the Düsseldorf School of landscape painters. From 1887 onwards he spent every summer in the Dutch fishing village of Katwijk, where he captured village life, beach scenes and the lives of the local fishers in his paintings. His impressionistic, often sketch-like style and unity of tone reveal the influence of painters from the Hague School, particularly Mauve and Mesdag.
