Gert Stegeman initially ran a textile shop and only later became a full-time painter and graphic artist. He had his shop and studio in Arnhem's Sabelpoort. He also had a studio there, from which he painted scenes of passers-by. He also liked to work in the open air, preferably near the Rhine, where he made landscapes with cows and horses or he painted women walking with their playing children in Park Sonsbeek. He did all this with a bright colour palette in impressionist style. Stegeman made a long trip to Portugal, Spain and Algiers. Later in life he also taught, including Otto Stark and Beer Suringh.
