Gottfried van Pelt was born in Antwerp to Dutch parents. Initially destined for trade, he chose the painting profession at an older age and took classes at the Antwerp Academy for three years. He then lived in Blaricum and from 1907 in Amsterdam. There he became especially known for his powerfully painted still lifes of living and dried flowers and with polder landscapes.
