Greet (later Margaritha) Feuerstein lost her parents at a young age and grew up in a foster family. In 1911 she completed her education at the domestic science school in Amersfoort. The headmistress of the school ensures that Greet can then take lessons at the academy in The Hague, after which she chooses Jan Toorop as her teacher. From an early age, she admired the work of Paula Modersohn-Becker, especially the firm forms of her portraits, but developed a style all her own with talent and willpower. As early as 1924, her expressionistic, stylized portraits, still lifes and landscapes were praised by critics. In 1926 she married painter and art critic W. Jos. de Gruyter. After 1945 she became a member of Pulchri Studio in The Hague, where her work was regularly exhibited. Critics praise her work for its smoother lines and expressive colours.
