The name Van Mook is today best known by the painter-sculptor Piet van Mook. But his father, Harry van Mook, also painted. Van Mook senior was born in 1888 and has worked in Amsterdam for almost his entire life. He has left a diverse oeuvre; he painted portraits, still lifes, marines and landscapes. Van Mook managed to combine soft colors into an appealing paint palette. He was also an innovator in the field of graphic art, especially in his etchings, which he combined with aquatint. The experimental nature of this in lines and use of color is occasionally reflected in his paintings, with which he deviated from the hitherto usual impressionism. The painter took lessons at the evening drawing school of the Sint Josef companions in Haarlem and studied at the Rijksnormaalschool. In addition to being a painter, Van Mook was also a teacher at the Amsterdam Graphic School.
