Hendrik van Steenwijk, born in Amsterdam in 1864, developed from a stage set painter into a versatile impressionist. His period as an independent artist started when he moved to The Hague around 1890 and was included in the circle around Jan Toorop. A number of scenes leaning towards Symbolism, which served as book illustrations, date from that time. In addition, Van Steenwijk painted powerful, impressionist city and beach views, including in Domburg. Around 1914 the painter moved to Haarlem. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Frans Hals Museum organized a solo exhibition of his work in 1934.
