The watercolor still lifes of Herman Henstenburgh, painter of flowers, birds and insects, are a typical example of the traditional Dutch still life painting of the 17th century. Plants and animals are shown in great detail; attention is paid to dew drops, flies and butterflies. Henstenburgh was a pupil of fellow townsman Johannes Bronckhorst. Just like the botanical painters Hendrik Graauw and Alida Withoos, he worked on behalf of Agnes Block to record the special collection of exotic animals, insects, plants and fruits in the garden of her country estate Vijverhof aan de Vecht.
