Hermina van der Haas was born in Amsterdam in 1843. She received her painting training from the animal painter P.F. van Os, then at J.A.B. Stroebel. Then, like most female painters in the 19th century, she chose to paint flower and fruit still lifes. Now and then she deviated from this genre with portraits and flower girls.
