Hugo Uher

The Skater
bronze 14.5 x 19.5 cm, signed on the base and executed ca. 1930

This sculpture was previously for sale.

The sculptor Hugo Uher learned artistry at the art academy in Prague and made study trips to Rome and Venice. His talent was soon discovered and he was commissioned to make tombstones and a mausoleum. In addition to monumental sculpture, Uher also made small sculptures. His oeuvre shows that he was inspired by skating figures. The reason for this is unknown. The skaters seem to be toiling for more speed, but at the same time the balance of the technique is recognizable. Uher is especially praised for the life-size statue of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) that he made in 1929 for his hometown. The artist's life came to a tragic end; he died in captivity at the end of World War II.
