Jacoba van der Stok was a daughter of the painter of winter views Jacobus van der Stok. She lived and worked for most of her life in Amsterdam, where she made a name for herself with particularly finely elaborated still lifes of flowers and fruit. In style and conception, her work was closer to the stately still lifes of the Dutch 17th and 18th century than to the romantic 19th century flower still lifes of painters such as Margaretha Roosenboom and Gerardine van de Sande Bakhuyzen.
