Jan H.B. Koekkoek was the third son of the romantic navy painter Hermanus Koekkoek, and was taught by his father. His influence is still clearly visible in the careful painting style and fine detailing of his early sea and river views. In later years he sought more and more connections with the Hague School and painted beach and seascapes in a somewhat looser painting style. This view at the head of Scheveningen near the Keizerstraat is quite unique. We see the Oude Kerk on the right and behind it, on the high dune next to the Seinpostduin, the dome of (reverend) Faassen de Heer. After his death in 1840, the dome was used as a tavern. The building, which was characteristic of the old Scheveningen, was demolished in 1889. On the left in the picture, half hidden behind the dune, we see Hotel Zeerust. It is funny that Koekkoek paints the hotel in the situation before the renovation and renovation of 1882. So he probably used older sketches.
