The motif of a rider on a towpath is part of the work of J.H. Weissenbruch every now and then before, in sunlight and in gray weather, in cloud shade or rain. In Ruiter op de Haagpad he depicts the subject under an impressively high cloudy sky that is reflected in the water of the towage. The dark boat that is pulled, no more than a dark stripe, is almost entirely absorbed in the bank vegetation. In this painting, all attention is focused on the phenomenal sky, and on the silhouette of the hunter that is reflected in it, seated sideways on his hunter's horse. It is a loosely brushed landscape, in which the wet, rough banks of the towpath and the mood of a rainy day are convincingly depicted. It must be one of the last paintings Weissenbruch made. Contrary to what is usually expected, the artistic quality of his work only got higher with the years, which this painting proves.
