In the early 20th century, uninfluenced by contemporary art movements, Jan Tiele painted impressionist flower arrangements, still lifes and landscapes, but also cityscapes and figure pieces. He was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, where he was taught by, among others, August Allebé and Nicolaas van der Waay. Tiele lived in Arnhem for the last ten years of his life. In 1921 he traveled to Morocco and through Southern Europe, which inspired him to paint expressive, colourful depictions. The artist was praised for his effective mood images, and for the 'natural rendering with a great warmth of feeling'.
