Madou was one of the most important Belgian genre painters of the 19th century. His paintings and watercolours, elaborated with great precision, have a humorous, sometimes moralizing undertone. They have been praised by critics and enthusiasts alike and Madou has received many high honours during his lifetime. He started his career as a calligraphist, portrait lithographer and cartographer, which explains his great attention to detail.
