This work was purchased in France, where Jongkind is considered one of Claude Monet's greatest inspirations. His Views of Holland and Clairs de lune are highly sought after. It comes from the collection of Théophile Bascle, a collector and friend of the painter. It was owned by collectors in Bordeaux, Paris, Amsterdam, and London. It then traveled via New York to Burgundy.
