J.A.B. Stroebel was a student at the Academy in The Hague under the direction of Bart and Huib van Hove. He specialized in painting and watercolours of Old Dutch interiors with figures, inspired by the work of the 17th-century painter Pieter de Hoogh. His work is characterized by a warm colour scheme and a concentration of a warm, vibrating sunlight on a wall, a painting, along a staircase or in a courtyard. He was the teacher of Jacob Maris, among others.
