J.A. Knip lived and worked a large part of his life in Paris. From 1809-1812 he travelled through Italy, where the landscape around Rome and Naples inspired him in particular to paint panoramic landscapes in a serene atmosphere. He thereby joined the 'Italianisanten', artists from the Northern countries who painted around 1800 the serene atmosphere and the bright light of the Italian landscape. During this period, Knip also made countless detailed sketches, that became the basis for later paintings.
