Jozef Cantré, sculptor, woodcarver and graphic artist, was trained at the Ghent Academy, but fled to the Netherlands in 1918. There he became friends with Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe, who had previously moved to the artists' village of Blaricum. Under the influence of German expressionist movements such as Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, the three developed an expressionist style that would later become known under the term Flemish expressionism. Via Hendrik Wiegersma, physician and artist, Cantré Ossip became acquainted with Zadkine, whose cubist style would be crucial for the development of Cantré. Cantré was only able to return to Belgium in 1930.
