Jozef Hoevenaar came from a Utrecht family of painters: his father and teacher Willem Pieter made Old Dutch interior and exterior pieces, his uncle Cornelis Willem sr was a painter of genre paintings and still lifes, and his cousin Cornelis Willem jr was a landscape painter. Jozef Hoevenaar chose the same theme as his uncle, for his paintings as well as for etchings and lithographs. He was a drawing teacher at the Utrecht society 'Kunstliefde'. Museums: e.g. Central Museum, Utrecht; State Print Room Amsterdam.
