Jurjen de Haan belongs to the post-war generation of painters from The Hague. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague with, among others, Co Westerik. Initially influenced by the Cobra language with its wonderful creatures, he, like Maarten van Dreeven, focused on photorealism in the 1980s. Then he definitely takes a new path with brightly coloured lyrical abstract canvases. ‘I work agile in bold paint on large formats’ he once summed up his work very simply. Jurjen de Haan was chairman of Pulchri Studio from 1983-1988 and from 1963 to 2011 a teacher at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem.
