The Austrian genre painter Karl Feiertag grew up in Vienna and studied under Franz Rumpler and J.M. Trenkwald. His oeuvre comprises landscapes, cityscapes and figures. He belongs to the group of artists that regularly travelled to the Netherlands between 1900 and 1910 to paint the local fishers, the bulb fields and the traditional dress worn in Volendam and Marken. Feiertag was well-known for his illustrations in newspapers and magazines and his entertaining designs for postcards featuring children, including boys and girls in fanciful Volendam outfits.
