Lambertus Zijl was one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the early 20th century. His name is mainly associated with his so-called 'building sculptures', monumental, most stylized figures and reliefs on buildings, which form a unity with the architecture. Zijl was educated at the Quellinusschool and the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam. In 1894 his collaboration with H.P. Berlage and other modern architects, such as De Bazel, Kropholler and Staal. He also collaborated with the sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa. His most famous monumental works include the figures and reliefs on the Beurs van Berlage (1898-1903) and the building of the Ned. Handels-Maatschappij in Amsterdam (1919-'26). He also worked with the decorative artist Lion Cachet on room paneling and ship interiors. Zijl also made a few funerary monuments and small sculptures in an impressionistic style: portrait heads, animal and child figures.
