Leendert van der Vlist, a pupil of the Hague Academy, worked more or less in the style of the Hague School. In the course of his life he distances himself from this influence and gray tones give way to a bright palette. Especially in the period from about 1924 to 1930, in which he regularly stayed in Italy, he had his still lifes, Dutch landscapes and city and village views bathed in a sparkling, southern light. Van der Vlist was taught by Andries van den Berg and later by Willem de Zwart. He was a member of the associations Arti et Amicitiae and St. Lucas.
