Abry grew up in Antwerp as the son of a general. After his training at the Academy, he specialized in painting portraits and military scenes, especially cavalry. His paintings aptly document the military life in the 2nd half of the 19th century: the battles and exercises, the parades and the simple daily activities in the barracks.
