The Zwolle painter Lucie van Groningen, hailing from a highly artistic background, received a thorough education at the Academy in The Hague, the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, and subsequently the Académie Colarossi in Paris. In 1913, she married the painter Derk Meeles, with whom she moved into the ‘Vlasschuur’ on the Ruiterweg in Laren, where she would continue to live and work until 1968, a few years before her death. During her time in the Gooi region, Van Groningen painted landscapes, still lifes, flowers, and portraits in a lively impressionistic-naturalistic style, initially influenced by her husband. Her watercolours, in particular, were painted in beautiful, ethereal pastel tones. In her colorful oil works, her brushwork became increasingly loose over the years.
