In 1890 L.A. Roessingh exchanged his birthplace Assen for Antwerp, where he studied at the Academy and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts. In the summer, however, he returned to his beloved Drenthe, to paint the landscape and the farming population. Back in Antwerp in the winter, he regularly exhibited in art galleries and Salons. He has not exhibited much in the Netherlands. He was, however, a member of De Ploeg in Groningen and St. Lucas in Amsterdam. Roessingh painted impressionistic Drenthe landscapes and village scenes, and was also an excellent portraitist. A special theme within his oeuvre are representations of popular life in the style of Breughel, often with a caricature character. Unlike his landscapes, these are painted flat and with strong contours.
