The North German impressionist Max Kuchel became especially known for landscapes for which the nature around his hometown of Hamburg was the source of inspiration. The northern German Holstein, the Alstertal and the landscape around the Kellersee, in spring or autumn, can be found in many of his paintings. He also painted portraits. Max Kuchel was born in 1859 in Altona, just outside Hamburg. He was educated at the academies of Düsseldorf and Munich and made several study trips, including to Switzerland, Bohemia and Holland.
