The cityscapes of Oene Romkes de Jongh show all the characteristics of the romantic Dutch cityscape as it took shape in Amsterdam in the 19th century: the accurate elaboration, the lively furnishings and the attention to old, Dutch architecture. Not much is known about the painter himself. He was born in Makkum in 1812 and probably lived and worked in Amsterdam for most of his life. There he was mainly inspired by the work of contemporary Cornelis Springer and his pupil Adrianus Eversen. The painter's oeuvre includes atmospheric city views in summer and winter, including those of Amsterdam and the Zuiderzee harbors, and a few landscapes.
