This German artist, like his father, initially worked as a designer in a porcelain factory in Scheibe, where he was trained from the age of 15. From 1900 Poertzel established himself as an independent sculptor in Coburg and received various commissions from national and municipal authorities. After eight years he moved to Munich, where he studied at the academy and had his own studio. In the 1920s and 1930s, he received several commissions for portrait busts from the noble family of Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. Otto Poertzel exhibited his sculptures at many international exhibitions and fairs. His sculptures – most graceful dancers in Art Deco style and robust animal figures – are still very popular.
