Otto von Waetjen was a painter and graphic artist. He studied at a private drawing and painting school, then with his uncle Otto Vautier in Geneva, painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes. He completed his education at the Académie Humbert in Paris. Here he was in the circle of intellectuals and avant-garde artists who met in the Café du Dôme in Montparnasse. From 1914 to 1920 Von Waetjen was married to the famous French painter Marie Laurencin. They stayed in Spain during the First World War. From 1919 Von Waetjen lived and worked in Düsseldorf, later in Munich. He painted various subjects such as nudes, landscapes and scenes in cafés and night rooms.
